This workshop is for the experienced diabetes educator who has learned the basics of Motivational Interviewing, but would like to strengthen skills and learn new ways to incorporate it into counseling sessions. This is suitable for people who currently use MI on a daily basis in their practices.
Motivational Interviewing is an effective patient-centered approach for helping people change by:
- Actively listening and working collaboratively
Evoking the patient's ideas and their plan(s) toward better health
Motivational interviewing is a counseling style involving specific learnable skills. This workshop will go beyond the basics providing:
Small groups of colleagues working together in the learning process
Practice "real play" interviews with one another with helpful feedback
NOTE: This pre-conference CANNOT be attended as a stand alone educational experience. It must be combined with one day or with the full conference. Registration may be limited, please register early. Registration for the pre-conference is only available during the registration process.

As a physician I have worked with people with diabetes who are struggling with or neglecting diabetes self care. I also work through a grant with Monida Healthcare Network to improve diabetes and cardiovascular healthcare in rural Montana hospitals and clinics as they adopt electronic health records. I offer motivational interviewing trainings to healthcare organizations and also work with small groups who want to learn MI. On occasion I offer public MI training programs in Missoula, MT.
