Workshop A: Basics of Insulin Pumps 

Objectives & Agenda:

An Insulin Pump Education course designed for educators with little to no pump experience, or only know one product. We will talk about pump theory and therapy, candidate selection for pumps, making recommendations to providers, basics of pump set up and algorithms. We will then break up in groups for hands on pump training for all pumps currently on the market. Re-grouping will involve discussion on limitations of pumps, biases, CGM integration, reports and assessments.

Jennifer Okemah is the director of the Diabetes & Nutrition Education Center at the Western Washington Medical Group (WWMG).  She is board certified in advanced diabetes management, a certified diabetes educator (CDE), and a certified insulin pump trainer for every FDA approved device, and certified as a sports specialist - dietetics.  The WWMG Diabetes Program has 4 (soon to be 5) locations. Their team of diabetes educators are at a variety of skill levels. Jennifer believes in opening up avenues to create more CDE's. She has a passion in teaching critical thinking and spends a lot of time training other diabetes educators with the goal of positioning our field as solid team members in the changing world of medicine.

Workshop B: Pre-Diabetes

Objectives & Agenda:
In the first segment, a clinical application: Dr. Wysham will discuss prevalence and rate of progression of pre-diabetes to diabetes, and risk factors of both. The workshop will address pre-diabetes complications, screening tools, prevention trials, CVD Outcomes (CVOT, CIMT study, Acarbose study, DA Qing study, ADDITION study), CV risk factor treatment and the cost effectiveness of programs to treat patients.

In the second segment, a practical application: Emily Fleury and Lisa Randall will speak on implementing a Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program (MDPP).  This comprehensive session will cover the following topics:

  • MDPP components
  • Supplier enrollment
  • Curriculum
  • Payment model
  • Claims submission
  • IT considerations and capabilities
  • Requirements for MDPP coaches
  • Eligible beneficiaries
  • In-person vs virtual classes
  • Quality measurement and reporting

Presenters: Carol Wysham, MD           

Dr. Wysham is Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine and is Section Head of the Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology at Rockwood Clinic in Spokane, Washington. Her current areas of research interest include reduction of CVD risk in type 2 diabetes and improving delivery of care for diabetes. She has conducted numerous trials for the National Institute of Health including the ACCORD Trial and the AIM-High Trial. She is a member of the American Diabetes Association and The Endocrine Society and a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology and The American College of Physicians.

Emily has been the director of INHS Health Training for the past 3 years and is also the director for health@work and Community Wellness programs through INHS.   Emily has been teaching and coordinating education courses for the community, worksites, and medical professionals for over 11 years at INHS.

and Lisa Randall, RD, LD, CDE

Lisa received her degree in nutrition from Oregon State University and completed her dietetic internship at Indiana University Medical Center, Indianapolis, IN. Lisa has practiced in the field of nutrition for 29 years and has been a certified diabetes educator for 9 years. Lisa is the clinical coordinator for the INHS Community Wellness Center. Lisa has received both her Level 1 and Level 2 Certification of Training in Adult Weight Management through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Lisa received the Washington State Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Community Practice Award for Excellence in 2011.
